The Original Wedding Videographer
Michael Nelson can say he did something extremely unique: in 1984 he created the first commercial wedding video product. Michael discovered he could create an affordable video by shooting on a professional video camera, but recording to a consumer grade VHS deck via a speciality made cable. He then edited the videos shot by shot using two VHS decks.
The product wasn’t immediately popular, as many potential customers didn’t own VHS players. Michael would carry a television and VHS player to clients homes in hopes of making a sale. But 40 years and 2700 weddings later, Michael is still passionate about preserving history and memories through the wedding video.

    I remember that this place was the best! Walking in as a kid was so exciting! The last movies I saw there were Midnight showings of the Original Start Wars Trilogy when they were re-released in the mid-late nineties. It was a sad day when they domes were torn down. But at least we still had the Motor-Vu Drive in down the road, at least for awhile.

    Programs like this are great but where are the intermediate free harm reduction services to give these vulnerable, traumatized vets access not only to a place to sleep and eat, but also a place to find mental health and community resources and to learn safe use and harm reduction strategies so that they might survive to make it to a place in their life where they are actually ready to start over and face the withdrawal and all the trauma and pain that has been numbed by substances for so long and then have the access to a program like this one to help them through it even without complete sobriety. Harm reduction, I think, is where it really starts. Without these scaffolds in place, people in homelessness situations and reaching harmful levels of substance addiction do not have an intermediate between being housed and fed just for the night and completely giving up all the coping mechanisms that have kept them from feeling the intense fear and pain of their past over and over again in order to be housed for 2 years and commit to getting their life together. There needs to be something in between and I really don't think that it should take an overdose, doing something horrible to somebody while under the influence, an HIV diagnosis or severe withdrawal/dopesickness to get a person to be ready to take their addiction and their life into their own hands and seek help. I think that help should always be available, especially in a form that doesn't require a person to be sober 100% and doesn't pass judgement but rather offers empathy, resources, harm reduction and medical care to the struggling addict who wants to recover but can't stop relapsing or the homeless kid who was abused by his parents and had to sell his body to survive the streets and started taking drugs to cope with the traumatic experience. I think we put too much responsibility on the sick person to want to get better in order to help them, rather than understanding why the person is sick in the first place and what we can do to support them even if they do use substances as a result of their adversities. To me, the important thing is community support and openness and empathy, not whether they are ready to stop drugs or alcohol. Addicts are much more likely to become ready quicker when they are well supported even when they are not sober, than when they are only supported if clean. Let's not forget that prolonged alcohol and drug use can change a person's brain chemistry and can even change them physiologically. Even if a person desperately wants to get off the substance and become fully sober, it can be excruciating to go without, and it takes a long time and a lot of trial and error, therapy and practice for the brain to rebuild new neural pathways and for the body to heal its physical dependence. This is why I never look down on a person who suffers from addiction. Most of the time, they have had serious psychological trauma, disabling mental illness or experienced physical, sexual, or psychological abuse and had no support from their community or family and found no other way to cope with the severe repercussions than to numb them with a substance that wrapped its addictive tendrils around their brain's reward center. It is tragic and I think it is the most vulnerable people in our communities who are most at risk to becoming addicted to using substances and to die of overdose. This is why harm reduction matters.

    stories of great inspiration. i truly regret not serving in the military, and for ever will live with that regret. have been trying to write a song about homeless vets , and have struggled . after watching this story i realized that it is virtually impossible to write about something you never experienced. I have made it my personal goal to study this very sensitive topic , in the ultimate hope to not only finish this song, but find a way to help the plight of our homeless veterans, or just to make a difference . the more people made aware of their struggles the better we will be able to help those in need.

    0:51 SOME humans have viewed nature as a resource to extract commodities. MANY indigenous communities have understood for millennia that we are a part of nature. ❤ Love that you are doing this program about rights of nature. AND we need to point out that any group trying to extract for their own gain are wrong. Capitalism is killing us.

    As a guy who was born and raised in Ogden, I like this Documentary, it is very well done and great to see. I have spent a lot of time on 25th Street. I have worked a lot of time at Weber State and at McKay Dee Hospital. Lots of time at Raptors games. Ogden River, Weber River. The Swap Meets at Motor Vu was my Sunday mornings before church. My dad taught me to get to know and respect those who are respectful on both sides. I kind of played on both sides of the tracks/fence. Just a small thought, why is the Church represented the way it is? Why not have a small amount of representation for the church and people from the church? They are people too ya know. Quite a large part of what Ogden is. Just my two cents from a documentary that is 17 years old and otherwise very well done.

    Nature became a place you go to..... Sadly the system has created world that is designed us to be weak, disoriented, distant from another, distant from ourselves... Busy giving our time for money, running from point A to point B but never quite there.. Blinded by weak leaders that want to keep us weak and obedient so they can live there lavish lives... Until we understand that are differences is what enriches us and this makes diversity something good, other than that it will be the walls that seperate us.... We need to loose the narrow concept of human liberty and fight for all things that support Life and the diversity of life, like the plants, the water, the air, the animals all great and small, the very Earth it all inhabits, We above all Have to realize that we have a great power, that is far greater than the beautiful gifts of the plants, animals, the wind, water......We have the power to care for....care for all life, we have been given this gift, because the Earth needs us, just as we need her, it's time to give back, it's time to be Caretakers, for the earth...... So send this to people you know, and maybe they will do the same, people you care about and want to care for the earth....🙏😔

    The Cinedome was always my favorite theater. I first saw a movie there in the early '70s -- I think it was "Where the Red Fern Grows," but I may be wrong -- when we were vacationing in Utah when I was about 12 or 13. Then I landed the film critic's job at the Standard-Examiner in 1985 after graduating USU, and I preferred to watch movies at the Cinedome. I saw most films at critics' screenings in SLC before they opened, but I spent countless evenings at the Cinedome taking my wife to movies. I wrote a feature story about a projectionist who worked at the Cinedome, so I spent an evening with him in the projection booth watching as he switched projectors and "built up" the reels. An S-E photographer also used the Cinedome to illustrate a story about customer behavior during screenings. Everyone associated with the theater -- did Plitt or Cineplex-Odeon lease it at some point? My memory fades -- was always so helpful. We managed to secure the theater for the Ogden premiere of "Three O'Clock High" (the S-E sponsored it), which was lots of fun. It was a great venue.

    • @brendonla
      @brendonla 3 місяці тому

      Regarding Plitt or Cineplex-Odeon: I think it remained independent throughout its existence. But I moved away in 1991 after college and perhaps from 1991-2001 at some point perhaps the owners did decide to become part of one of those orgs. I think the Wilshire Theater in South Ogden was a Plitt theater if I remember correctly. My other favorite place to go for a movie was the Egyptian Theater in downtown Ogden -- big screen but I don't know if it was equipped to show 70MM films. Regardless that was a good theater also. So many childhood memories of going to movies with my dad or with friends growing up in Ogden, Utah. In Salt Lake City, I'd only been to the Centre Theater, which where my brother and I dragged our poor mother to see "Star Wars" during its initial release in May 1977 (without "Episode 4" in the title crawl because at that point 20th Century Fox had no idea it was going to be such a smash hit).
